A brief history of Agia Eleni

In 1836 the first listing of the settlements in the Trizinia area took place. At that time Agia Eleni did not exist as we know it today. In the area near the current village of Agia Eleni a settlement with the name Bedeni existed at the time. The word "Bedeni" comes from the Turkish word Beden, which means "body" or "fortress". This settlement was located 1-2 km west of the current Agia Eleni and was part of the former municipality of Dryopi.

The earliest reference to Agia Eleni in written records can be found in Antonis Miliarakis' book "Modern and Ancient Political Geography of the Prefecture of Argolida and Korinthia" which was published in 1886. In his book Miliarakis describes the location of Bedeni as a citadel surrounded by walls of Pelasgian origin. This is an indication of the existence of an ancient town at that location. At the foothill of the citadel one could find the remnants of an Ottoman tower and some buildings of the (by then abandoned) settlement of Bedeni. By the time the book was written people had already moved to a new location east of Bedeni named "Bafi", a name which has Turkish roots. In that location ten new stone buildings were built. These appear to be the beginnings of the modern village of Agia Eleni. It is not known when exactly the official name of the village was changed from "Bafi" to "Agia Eleni". The term "Bafi" is however still popular among the local population when referring to the settlement.  The village currently belongs to the municipality of Trizinia, which since 1925 forms part of the prefecture of Attica. Trizinia is an area with rich history. In ancient times it constituted a powerful state with Trizina as its capital.

As the name reveals, the religious element is evident in the village. In the center of the settlement stands the church of St Konstantinos & Eleni (Constantine & Helen). Previously there was an old building of unknown date at the same location, which was demolished to build a larger church. This new church was inaugurated in 1981 and was funded by a member of the Mougios family who lived in America at the time. Two more churches can be found in the wider Agia Eleni area: the church of St Petros (Peter) and the church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity). The latter was built in 1706 and has been declared a monument.
